When you make biscuits, it might go like this: find recipe, switch the oven on, get out ingredients (or if you're like me, realise I don't have all the ingredients and have to go shopping or swap recipes), measure, melt, mix, spoon the mixture onto greased trays, put into oven, put timer on, wait, put biscuits on cooling rack, wash up and put everything away.⁠

That process would be the same for one biscuit or 20.⁠

When you create social content, it's a similar process of remembering why you're posting, finding visuals, thinking what to say, writing it, editing, adding extras like hashtags or tagging other accounts and posting at the right time. While you're going through that process, it's easier to create more than one post at a time. ⁠

I asked friends about their challenges of social media on a Facebook post recently. A few people asked to 'bring back the Yellow Pages' and magazines. ⁠

There was a simplicity in the days of 'let your fingers do the walking' but also a lack of flexibility. You had one chance to get everything right for your business listing: one snippet of text, contact details and possibly some artwork. If that changed or you got it wrong, you had to wait a year for a new listing. ⁠

Now, we might feel overwhelmed by the constant pressure to share content, but at least we can try new things and see how they go. We can experiment every single day - not just A/B testing, but CDEF and G. There is less pressure to get things perfect out of the gate. ⁠

When we repeatedly do things, we tend to get better at them, including our creative job and social media posts. I do miss print advertising just a tiny bit, but not the cost of it or chance to try out new things and flex my creativity. ⁠

A. You can share your work so that the clients who are right for you will be drawn like moths to a flame and equally, those clients for whom you are not a good fit are not likely to get in touch. Everyone wins! ⁠

This played out for real at the weekend when I wanted a new hairdresser. I booked a consultation after having seen the lovely new colour on someone local I follow on Instagram. I could click through to see the rest of the hairdresser's work and when it was time for a new cut, got in touch. (Actually it was time about three months ago - it really is looking a bit wild)! ⁠

It was easy to message her on the platform, she responded and we set up a consultation. It was SO EASY!!!⁠
